The touristic development of Coronie, a SWOT analysis

Coronie is a vibrant yet small district that so far has only attracted sporadic tourism. Previous studies in the region have indicated that Coronie possesses significant assets and has the potential to welcome more tourists. This current research builds upon these findings and focuses on identifying and analyzing the challenges within the tourism development of the Coronie community, with specific attention to Totness.

The aim of this research is to gain a profound understanding of the challenges and obstacles faced in the tourism development in Coronie. It encompasses a thorough analysis of the current situation, identifying and evaluating existing bottlenecks and limitations. Additionally, exploratory discussions have been conducted with local stakeholders, including residents, entrepreneurs, and government officials, to gain insights into their perspectives and needs regarding tourism development. The goal of this research is to provide concrete insights and recommendations that can contribute to the advancement of tourism development in Coronie. By identifying bottlenecks and proposing suitable solutions, we aim to create a positive impact on the local economy, the preservation of cultural heritage, and the overall quality of life of the Coronie community. The identified bottlenecks involve the challenging accessibility of Coronie and the fact that the district’s attractive features remain largely unknown to potential tourists. Moreover, there is a lack of suitable accommodations to receive visitors. The district also faces a shortage of diverse and appealing activities. Furthermore, there is the issue of vacant government buildings, which represents missed opportunities.

As a result of this research, recommendations have been formulated to address the identified bottlenecks. These recommendations encompass various strategies and measures that can be implemented to stimulate and support tourism development in Coronie. To put Coronie on the tourism map, an action plan has been developed, with a focus on engaging the local population. This plan includes strategies to enhance the district’s visibility, offer diverse and engaging activities, facilitate transportation and lodging for visitors, and ultimately establish collaborations with tourism companies. With this holistic approach, the aim is not only to promote tourism in Coronie but also to strengthen the local community and enable them to benefit from the positive impact of sustainable tourism.
